Rivers said battles and soldiers are one part of the war but there were also others that played vital roles during the time period such as soldiers’ wives, abolitionists and politicians. “We’re trying to show people what life was like and what these people went through,” said Darrell Rivers, president of the Huntington Beach Historical Society.Ībout 1,000 people from across the country participated as actors in the reenactment, Rivers said. He estimated about 12,000 to 15,000 people visited throughout the weekend. Much of the current country’s discourse has been over Confederate monuments, but at the reenactments the focus was on the past. But the weekend events were more about education than a debate about the motives of the war.
